So, in keeping with the theme of moving away from Church Plant problems and now beginning to deal with church problems this was a new church problem and lots of churches are figuring out what to do with it.
What do we do about texting and cell phones and Blackberries and iPhones in church?
It came up this week because a couple of people were distracted by a leader that was typing away on a phone during the message.
I leave what I learned as a pastor in dealing with these kinds of things in the church for a future post. I'm still in the learning curve. I'm reminded afresh that I have not 'arrived'. I've still got room to learn and grow.
But, come to find out my leader wasn't texting, they were reading along with an online Bible and taking notes.
AND, they reminded me that they follow me on Twitter (http://Twitter.com/andyfalleur) and I send text messages to my Twitter followers of big points that I hear while someone is speaking at conferences.
The culture in North America is changing. Mobile devices aren't going away, in fact as the announcements are made people are checking their calendars on them. People are using online Bibles like http://youversion.com . And you may be suprised to know that Ottawa is one of the smartest cities on the planet.
So, the next time you're in church that person near you that seems so distracted because they are typing away on their mobile may actually be taking notes or better yet telling everyone that follows them on Facebook and Twitter what the pastor is saying.
Or they are smacking gum and texting or playing a game...
Anyone know how to setup a hashtag for Calvary Ottawa?
