My wife says I'm becoming more of a Canadian.
This is the first winter that we have really embraced ice skating. I've taken the kids to the Rideau Canal 3 or 4 times, and we have found a figure 8 shaped outdoor skating rink that the city of Ottawa calls a puddle over near Ryan and Rachel's house. We've been there a few times too.
I love it because it's FREE! And the kids are really enjoying it too. I'm starting to find my feet and I usually don't fall down. Although, last time, I did... everyone always laughs.
The kids fall down all the time, it's hilarious, but they are supposed to fall down, and they don't have as far to fall.
We got used skates from Play it Again Sports here in Orleans. The kids skates were less than $20, and I scored some CCM Tacks from 25 years ago, that were in really good shape for less than $50. They told me they retailed for like $400 when they came out and it's what all the NHL players had back in the day. Gen has some picked out, but she hasn't gotten back to the store to get them. She's been a little busy.
We've gone after school, on Sunday or Saturday mornings, and each time it's a blast.
Isabelle is doing great, last time, she was trying some dance moves. Olivia is doing good too, she's constant motion, her feet don't stop, I love it. Luc will skate for about 30 seconds and then he's done. He wants to ride in the sled, or play on the playground, or crawl around on the ice, or play in the snow, or slide down the hill. If he's in the sled, Olivia comes over and jumps on top of him, he gets frustrated, kicks her off, they are a pair!
I've noticed that I'm not alone. There's a bunch of other dads out there, wearing old skates, taking their kids skating and trying to help them learn. It's great fun.
We couldn't make it to Winterlude last weekend, and I'm hoping to take the kids maybe on Sunday out there. It's so cool, the ice sculptures, the games, the food, the hot chocolate and of course skating!
So, taking my kids skating and wishing for a trip to Florida everyday...
Very Canadian...
